SUIT FIT GUIDE
What does drop mean in suits?
Drop describes the chest-to-waist proportion of a suit's cut. Size is a starting point for chest measurement, while drop helps explain how the waist is shaped within that size. Consider both for the right fit.

What does drop mean in suits?
A jacket that fits the chest but has excess waist fabric, or is hard to fasten at the waist, cannot be explained by size alone. Chest-to-waist proportion also affects fit. Drop is used to classify this proportion in menswear.
Within the same size and measurement system, a higher drop means a greater chest-to-waist difference and a narrower waist relative to the chest. A lower drop means closer measurements. Drop alone does not determine shoulder width, jacket length or trouser leg cut.
How is drop calculated?
In one metric system used in Türkiye, drop is half the difference between chest and waist circumference: Drop = (Chest circumference − Waist circumference) / 2. Both are body circumferences measured in centimetres.
For a 100 cm chest and 88 cm waist, the difference is 12 cm. In this system, 12 / 2 = Drop 6. At the same chest measurement, a 90 cm waist gives Drop 5 and an 84 cm waist gives Drop 8.
This calculation illustrates body proportions; it is not a direct size or ordering recommendation. Brands may use different systems, measuring points and ease allowances. Inch-based drop systems also exist, so do not equate numbers across systems. Use the selected design's manufacturer size chart.
What is the difference between Drop 5, 6 and 8?
Drop 5, 6 and 8 are not quality grades. Comparing the same size and system, Drop 5 has a smaller chest-to-waist difference than Drop 6, while Drop 8 has a larger one. A higher number does not fit everyone better.
Someone with similar chest and waist measurements may prefer a less tapered waist. A more pronounced difference may suit a more shaped waistline. Choose through measurements and fitting rather than height, weight or age alone.
| Drop | Waist circumference | Chest-to-waist difference |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 90 cm | 10 cm |
| 6 | 88 cm | 12 cm |
| 8 | 84 cm | 16 cm |
Are drop, size and slim fit the same?
No. Size is a measurement group, drop is the chest-to-waist proportion, and slim fit or regular fit describes the overall cut. The same size can have different drops, and the same drop can have different cut details.
Avoid fixed assumptions such as 'Drop 6 always means regular fit' or 'Drop 8 always means slim fit'. Assess jacket armholes, shoulders and length, plus trouser hips, thighs and hems separately. The 50 and 6 in 'size 50, Drop 6' are not interchangeable.
How do you measure chest and waist?
Pass a flexible tape around the widest chest area, parallel to the floor. Breathe normally and keep the tape snug without squeezing or slack. For the waist, use the point specified by the design's size chart. Waist circumference is not always the same as the level where trousers sit.
Do not confuse the flat width of a jacket or trousers with body circumference. Garment measurements include cut and ease. For remote support, state whether measurements are from the body or garment and where they were taken.
How do you choose the right drop?
Check shoulders and chest first. There should be no obvious pulling when the jacket is buttoned, and back and sleeves should allow everyday movement. Instead of sizing down and squeezing the chest to remove excess waist fabric, explore other cuts.
Try trousers separately: check waist, hip and thigh comfort when standing and sitting. A well-fitting jacket does not guarantee the trousers fit. Discuss possible alterations with the store after viewing the product.

Frequently asked questions about drop
Is Drop 5 incorrect? No; it can be valid in the measurement system used. However, listing a product as 'Drop 5' requires confirmation from its label or manufacturer.
Does a higher drop mean a smaller size? The size number can stay the same; the chest-to-waist proportion changes. A higher drop does not reduce every part of the jacket equally.
Can you buy a suit without drop information? Fit can be assessed from the size chart, trying it on and store advice. Missing drop information alone does not indicate quality.
Which drop suits plus sizes? There is no single correct number. Plus size alone does not describe chest-to-waist proportions; assess your measurements alongside the design's cut.
